The Tasmanian Government is moving to simplify the rules around long-term residency in caravan parks. Minister for Small Business and Consumer Affairs, Madeleine Ogilvie, announced that they will consult on the necessary reforms.
Currently, caravan park owners and long-term residents face many legal challenges, including issues related to contracts, planning, building, and property laws. Minister Ogilvie said, “We’re working to balance supporting our visitor economy, private ownership rights, and housing affordability under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.”
The Government has heard concerns about the rights and responsibilities of both owners and residents. To address these issues, the Department of Justice will prepare a Discussion Paper.
This paper will seek input on:
- Whether law reform is needed
- Potential governance arrangements for owners and residents
- Rights and obligations of owners and residents
- Dispute resolution mechanisms
- Implications for residential tenancy, building, public health, or planning
The Discussion Paper will be available for public consultation in August on the Department of Justice’s Community Consultations webpage.
Minister Ogilvie encourages all Tasmanians affected by these issues to share their views during the consultation period. This effort aims to create a fair and clear legal framework for long-term residency in caravan parks.
